ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Dansk ICYE is an organisation that woks with international exchange programmes. With us, the volunteer will have an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about international exchange programmes. They will participate in meetings and trainings arranged by Dansk ICYE. The main focus of the volunteer’s tasks will be on both the ESC and ICYE long-term exchange programmes. The working language for the staff, coworkers and exchangees will be English.

The volunteer will be engaged in a broad array of work areas such as external and internal communications, designing and planning activities for exchangees, preparing, coordinating and participating in various types of meetings with coworkers, but mainly, they will deal with ongoing administrative tasks.

Due to the dual quality of the position – both volunteer and worker at the coordinating office –, the volunteer will act as a bridge between both parts. They will keep in touch with exchangees – in cooperation with Dansk ICYE’s co-workers – during their project in Denmark, update them on the social activities in the organization, and help them explore ways to get involved locally and meet other young people in the area.

Kulturfabrikken

Volunteer at Kulturfabrikken: a place where the local children and young people can go and participate in events, concerts, workshops or skate or just hang out in the café with their friends. A place to which they can belong, where they can be themselves. Instead of hanging around in the streets and perhaps be tempted by a life on the criminal side – or just sit at home and be bored or lonely.

Himmelbjerggaarden

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Himmelbjerggården – the ‘Sky Mountain Farm’ – is a Nordic Inspirational centre for sustainable development at Himmelbjerget, Denmark. It dwells on 20 hectares of land surrounded by large forests and lakes. Our vision is to address the social and environmental challenges we face as a people, a call to action creating a culture rooted in the four dimensions of sustainability.

We are working with nature to support the regeneration of the soil and expand biodiversity as well as growing healthy food.

The farm hosts retreats, courses and training facilities with 65 beds, a large organic kitchen, a big venue for cultural events, an organic seasonal café as well as large festivals. We are in close collaboration with the municipality and local community.

Currently, about 12 residents plus children live here full time.

As a volunteer with the ESC Programme, we welcome you in one of our two main areas:

1- Regenerative Garden Project and Kitchen:

Collaboration with the team to cultivate beautiful, organic food. Assist in the transformation of the harvested produce in the industrial kitchen. Participation in to catering for various events held at the location.

2- Beautification of the Space:

Participation in ongoing renovations of the buildings. Assistance enhance the energy and ambiance both indoors and outdoors. Creation a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere for residents, guests, and all living beings, including animals and plants.

Røde Kors Aarhus

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The Red Cross in Aarhus is an independent division of the Danish Red Cross. We work and engage in the local community in Aarhus municipality. Currently, we have more than 40 activities in the municipality, where we help people who are experiencing loneliness, homeless people, people without a network and people in need of aid. Also, we provide courses and education and have several second-hand stores in the city. We are in constant development as we strive to provide voluntary help, when the need for it arises.

As an international volunteer with the Red Cross in Aarhus you’ll help and gain experience with planning events – big and small. We are especially looking for volunteers who are interested in promoting sustainability and second-hand shopping through different events such as pop-up stores in and around Aarhus.

Because, second-hand events/shops will be your primary focus, but it is also possible to get involved with other events and activities while you are here. You’ll find that we are very open to new ideas and that you will be able to impact the projects you work on.

The volunteer will work with their staff and ca. 100 volunteers to discuss and initiate activities for people who want a volunteer job or who need help to get on with their lives. The volunteer will also contribute to the planning of activities, projects and running a large volunteer house for our city’s social associations. The volunteer’s concrete tasks/projects will depend on their competences and interests.

Søholm Plejehjem

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Søholm Plejehejm is a nursing home for elderly people, which is connected to Aarhus Kommune – the municipality of Aarhus. Next to the nursing home there is a community center with a health center and a café and rooms for meetings and activities for citizens from the local area.
Søholm  is situated in Stavtrup 11 km south/west of Aarhus – Denmark’s second largest city. You can take the bus to Stavtrup (from close to your apartment ) in about 15 minutes.

The volunteers will be a part of the daily routines in the nursing home and community center. They will participate and get involved in many different tasks and activities involving senior and elderly citizens, ranging from supporting and running different activities and meetings to contributing to different initiatives targeting elderly. The activities are based on the wishes and needs of the elderly but also on the interest and abilities of the volunteer. The volunteer will also participate in many cultural events, for instance, Christmas and Easter and arrangements for their co-workers. Also the volunteer will be asked to arrange one or two cultural events related to their country and cultural and own interests. Also helping out in the kitchen is very much appreciated.

The volunteers will either live in a shared apartment or with a host family.

Aagaard Efterskole

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Aagaard Efterskole is a part of a network of schools in Denmark, known as “Efterskole”. “Efterskole” is a unique schooling concept found only in Denmark. Broadly speaking it is a private boarding school with government grants that provides Secondary School education for young people at the age of 15 to 17.

Each “Efterskole” chooses its own profile and an area on which it will focus its teaching, in addition to the compulsory subjects. Our school focuses on academic skills, traditional Danish gymnastics and optional subjects (music, creative, sport, and practical subjects). Pupils’ participation in the cultural debate is also seen as an important part of the individual’s personal development.

Aagaard Efterskole’s founding values are based upon Grundtvig/Kold social-cultural values, whose general principles are general education, co-existence and enlightenment for life, emphasizing putting historical, political and cultural issues into context. Pupils’ participation in the cultural debate is also seen as an important part of the individual’s personal development.

The staff currently consists of 17 teachers and 6 other members of staff.

Volunteering at the school

A timetable will be provided every week, which will give the volunteer a chance to use all their skills; linguistically, artistically, athletically, and socially. The volunteer will have the opportunity to work as a language assistant in co-operation with other teachers in the classroom.
The volunteer will have the opportunity to contribute during musical activities, sport activities, skiing, and other optional lessons. Participating in the daily tasks of the boarding school; monitoring of cleaning and mealtimes, planning evening activities, helping with homework etc.

Husmandsstedet

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Husmandsstedet is an activity and recreation center, located in a former farmhouse in the heart of Sdr. Naeraa, Aarslev. Here everybody is welcome to come and participate in different kind of activities or interest groups, such as music groups, drama, creative work, courses and training etc. More than 150 children and youngsters take advantage of Husmandsstedet, and each day about 40–60 are visiting the place.

The volunteer will work creatively with the children from 10 years of age and teenagers: playing games, encouraging them to do new activities or just being there for them and having a chat, etc.
The volunteer will be present during the opening hours of the centre and work under the supervision of his/her contact person.
Children love to try new things and the volunteer is invited to come up with his or her own ideas.
The volunteer will be living with a host family.

Kalø Skovbørnehus

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The Kindergarten and nursery “Kalø Skovbørnehus” is beautifully located in the middle of a forest, only 5 min walk from the seaside. There are four groups of children aged 0-3, 3-4, 4-5 and 5-6 under the same roof with different outside activities and right now we have 50 children and 8 staff members.

The kindergarten activities follow the seasons very closely. When harvest takes place, there is a celebration to which families are invited. In winter, we make bonfires to make food and keep us warm. Sometimes when the weather gets rough, children and staff find shelter in the stables or do gymnastics/sports in the gym. However, in snowy winters we playi and sledge in the snow. There is also a lot of singing and playing, storytelling, drawing, painting and many other activities in which the volunteer is expected to take part.

The town of Rønde is only three minutes away from the kindergarten by car or bus. All necessary items can be bought in Rønde, which is located half an hour away from Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city.

The volunteer will be attached one of the groups and help the staff in the daily work. The volunteer is also expected to do activities with the children. A member of the staff will be a tutor and supervisor for the volunteer.
Smoking is not allowed!

Odsherreds Efterskole

Odsherreds Efterskole is a Christian self-governing boarding school (efterskole) offering formal secondary education for 9th and 10th grade. There are around 160 students between 15-17 year, who stay at the school for one year. The school is situated in the western part of Zealand, in a small town named Faarevejle.

An “Efterskole” is a unique schooling concept found only in Denmark. It is a kind of a private boarding school with government grants that provides Secondary School education for young people, predominately between the ages of 14-17. The school is privately run, and this means that there is an annual fee for parents to send their child/children to the school, but families may apply for government funding depending on their financial status.

Living at the school, there is the opportunity to participate in all of the school’s activities during the week and at weekends. The volunteer will have a room in a house that will be shared with 2-4 other young people, who also work at the school. The school will provide a timetable for the volunteer, which will offer him/her the chance to use all of their skills, linguistically, artistically, in sports and socially. The volunteer will be involved in the areas of the curriculum that are relevant to his/her key skills. The volunteer would be offered the same learning possibilities as any trainee teacher with regards to pedagogy and didactics. The volunteer will be provided with constant support and advice. We expect the volunteer to engage in all aspects of the school’s life!

Rejsby European Efterskole

The school is located in the little village of Rejsby in Southern Denmark on the west coast of Jutland, just 5 km from Wadden Sea National Park and 45km from the German border.

Currently, the school has room for 139 students with a fairly equal balance between girls and boys. The students come from a variety of backgrounds both financially, socially and academically and all are welcome to apply to the school for the 9th or 10th grade. The students live and study at the school for one year only.

The students must understand that they will be living away from home for the most part of a year and are expected to participate in a small community, where teamwork is very important considering that the students live, work, clean and eat together at the school.

The volunteer is expected to play a vital role in the “efterskole” community and quickly develop a personal, yet professional relationship with the students. The school is built on openness, friendliness, tolerance and shared responsibility. The volunteer will be involved in the areas of the curriculum that are relevant to their key skillset, either linguistically, artistically, or socially. The volunteer will be offered the same learning possibilities of any trainee teacher with regards to pedagogy and didactics. Any volunteer will be provided with constant support and advice.

Vandel Efterskole is known for its high educational standards and pedagogical practices, but also the proven ability to develop our students both socially and academically. The majority of students continue into higher education.

Vardeegnens Gymnasieforberedende Efterskole

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The school is located in the west coast of Jutland and focuses on preparing its students for the Danish general upper secondary school called gymnasium (stx). The efterskole is a unique Danish independent residential school for students between 14 and 18 years. This type of school deals with both the educational and personal development of the students. It embraces a common educational focus on enlightenment for life, general education and democratic citizenship.

The efterskole has substantial freedom in terms of eg. choice of subjects, teaching methods and educational approach. These vary in accordance with the school’s political, religious or pedagogical orientation.

Volunteer Tasks: Will assist in German classes; conversation in German, bringing in German youth culture, participation in planning if wanted. Specific tasks depend on experience, skills and interests. Personal timetables allow the volunteer to use their skills within language, sports, art, e-sport, etc. The volunteer will be working closely with the teacher teaching the relevant subjects. The volunteer will sometimes be present at the school at night and in weekends, as the efterskole is a boarding school.

The volunteer will preferably be living in a host family, but it is also a possibility to live at the school.

Vedersø Efterskole – The International

The International Academy and Boarding School of Denmark is the only 100% English speaking efterskole in Denmark, where students aged 14-17 can combine the unique experience of attending a Danish efterskole/boarding school, with its proven educational and personal development qualities, with an international education. The school is a part of the self-governing institution Vedersø Idrætsefterskole (Sports College), which is one of Denmark’s leading sports and gymnastic schools.

Planned activities will vary depending on the participant’s individual skills, personal background and experience.Our range of informal and formal activities will give the volunteer the chance to use of their skills – linguistically, artistically, socially, and physically. Volunteers will assist in the classroom as both a guest teacher (and language assistant where relevant). Volunteers will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge and insight into the teaching profession and gain experience working with young people. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Bustrup Dagskole (Bustrup Day School) is looking for volunteers for a duration of 6 – 9 months with a working time of 30-35 hours a week. We are situated in the countryside and surrounded by a beautiful landscape. The project is ideal for volunteers who would like to live away from the city (there will be on-site accommodation) and participate in sports and outdoor activities.

We are looking for people between 18-30 years of age, who speak good English and have a genuine interest in climate and ecological issues. They should want to learn about pedagogy and teaching, both in theory and practice. The volunteers will share life and work with like-minded people and will be expected to take up challenges. As part of their daily routine, they will give a hand with the after-school programs with youngsters with special needs, and with our Garden Farming, husbandry and information work in the community.

At our school, we practice a strict no alcohol and no drugs policy. Our teenage students are vulnerable youngsters and come from various difficult backgrounds.

The volunteers will have a mentor – or a teacher. Each module – mostly a week at a time – has its own headline, introduction, theory, and practice. Each module is evaluated by each participant and by the group as well. The mentor will call the volunteers for meetings to discuss, evaluate and guide the different challenges in the daily programs – formal as well as informal learning. Halfway through their stay, the volunteer will have to write a report and, at the end, the mentor will write a final report on each volunteer’s achievements.

Vestjyllands Højskole

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Vestjyllands Højskole is a Folk Highschool that offers non-formal education for adults. Most students are between 18 and 26 years old. We have no academic requirements for admittance and there are no exams, but you get a diploma when you leave.

Among our activities, we have dance, ecology, theatre, singing, music, ceramics, painting ,writing, and cooking on the schedule. We follow an environmentalist philosophy and we produce all the energy needed ourselves. We have a large ecological garden, which is maintained by local voluntaries.

As a volunteer, you will be working in the garden, but in your spare time you will have the opportunity to take part in the above mentioned activities as well. Besides gardening, the volunteer will be faced with tasks of craftsmanship, especially carpentry and tasks such as bartending, management and cleaning.

Animal Care

Fjord&Bælt

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Fjord&Bælt is a research and outreach facility, that advocate the knowledge of marine life in Danish waters. At the facility, we have daily training and research of our three porpoises and three harbor seals. Our animals are located in the bay of Kerteminde, meaning their pool areas are located in the ocean. We work closely together with the Marine Biological Research Center located next to Fjord&Bælt. Here there are three male grey seals and one river otter.

The trainer team at Fjord&Bælt consists of 4 trainers and one zookeeper student. Besides the trainers, we also have interns, both Danish and international speaking, meaning our daily communication is in English. In order to show our interns the Danish culture, we also make an effort to arrange social gatherings outside of work.

Your main tasks will be to assist in the daily care and research of our marine mammal collection, which will include the daily cleaning of all animal areas and assisting in the many daily training and research sessions. Furthermore, since the animals need to be taken care of all year-round, the working hours will also be during weekends and holidays. In the season where the center is open, it is also important to help give our guests a great experience, which means interacting with them, answering their questions and so on. Lastly, we often need to pick up fish or drive to the vet with blood samples, therefore, it is preferred that you have a driver’s license.
